Who are ‘The Casual Creatives’?
Kristen is a self-taught modern folk artist from Southeastern Kentucky. Her simple and organic painting style is a direct reflection on her upbringing in the Appalachian mountains where she grew up watching and learning from family members who taught themselves the art of quilting, banjo playing, knitting and more. Being from humble roots, Kristen prizes the idea of ‘using what you have’ and incorporating recycled materials into her work. You can find her paintings on old house shutters, cabinet doors and barn wood, just to name a few……whatever she can find! The subjects she prefers to paint are those that influenced her as a child…….biblical scenes, angels, and everyday country scenes such as church picnics and river baptisms. Kristen is the former owner of a handmade art gallery, Sanctuary of Davidson where she represented 50 local artists and is also the creator of The Downtown Davidson Arts Festival where she loves to introduce the community to new artists. She believes art can be anything handmade and it doesn’t have to be financially out of reach. The Casual Creative is Kristen’s working art studio where she spends her days creating new works and filling online and custom orders for her much appreciated customers. She also teaches eclectic art classes teaching her students to incorporate items they love into their artwork. Kristen lives in Davidson with her hot, Irish husband and her 2 crazy teenage offspring.

While attending West Virginia University, Maria Hamm discovered and pursued her love for design and has found joy and delight dabbling in all things creative and crafty ever since. While living in Charlottesville, Virginia she worked in residential design, visual merchandising and taught dance. Both then and now, she continues to develop a blended design style that leans towards the organic and bohemian with just a touch of southern tradition. Believing that your home should be a reflection of who you are and things you love. Maria added to her earlier teaching experience while at The Sanctuary of Davidson where she taught painting and mixed media classes to folks of all ages. It was there she learned to carry her informal style into teaching. Helping students realize art can be approachable but mostly fun! At the Casual Creative, Maria continues to offer entertaining, educational and customized art experiences for all occasions, in addition to interior design consulting, in an intimate studio environment. Be it painting sunflowers on canvas or reimagining a corner of the place you call home, it is her heart to help students and clients create a bit of beauty one step at a time. Maria’s happy place is time spent with the ‘loves’ of her life…her high school sweet heart and husband, Mark, her two sweet and hilarious kids, Mack and Meila and of course Bogey & Charlie, her 2 favorite pups.
